What is the perfect region to take yourself, your family and your friends on an Ireland cycle tour. Having cycled all over Ireland and organised tours in most regions the underneath are my favorites:
Connemara is the queen of all regions for an Ireland cycle tour – it has everything a cycle tourer could wish for: varied landscapes, quiet back-roads, colourful villages and small towns, interesting historical sites, and a terrain neither too flat nor too hilly. And in the evening beautiful and friendly accommodations providing you with every comfort to ensure a good night’s sleep. It is here that most of our trips are based such as the Connemara at its Best Tour.
2- The Burren:
This is such a unique area made up of mainly limestone supporting an unusual flora of Mediterranean, alpine, and arctic flowers growing side by side. It is also an area that abounds in pre-historic sites such as the Poulnabrone Dolmen. The villages are colourful and reverberate with traditional Irish music. And the coastline is second to none, not just the Cliffs of Moher but in my mind even better the coast around Loop Head. And then there are so many quiet back-roads that make for a great cycle tour. Have a look at Along the Wild Atlantic Way.
3- Mayo and Sligo:
The Northwest of Ireland has long been a place with a spiritual resonance, and it is no wonder that WB Yeatswished to be buried under the shadow of Ben Bulben mountain in Sligo. In this region you can allow yourself to be mesmerised by a spiritual energy which weaves its way back to ancient times. There are ancient field systems, pre-historic passage tombs, early Christian churches and monasteries, and the ruins of once imposing castles. But above all you will cycle through amazing landscapes, the wild open seas, imposing cliffs, rugged hills and awesome beaches. This region is one of the least explored.
4- Ireland’s Ancient East
Closer to Dublin Ireland’s Ancient East showcases not only the stunning beauty of the landscape but also the lives, peoples and cultures that have inhabited it through the centuries and millennia. Having been the more prosperous side of Ireland and been divided into demesnes for Anglo-Irish and English landlords there are many beautiful big houses left to visit, such as Borris House and Kilkenny Castle. This is a region that has yet to be discovered and the Ancient East Tour will bring you to some of the best sites.
5- The Southwest
Who has not heard of the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula, these are without doubt some of the most well-known and loved areas, and rightly so as the landscape is stunningly beautiful. But there are further corners of the Southwest that are less over-run and equally beautiful and for an Ireland cycle tour provide better routes and roads.
Whatever region you feel drawn to, there is a cycle tour that can be built around your requirements. Come and experience it for yourself, your way. There’s no reason really, not to book an Ireland cycle tour with Green Marble Cycle Tours!!
